A story of going from being a non-runner to planning for a marathon in three years...

Decisions, Decisions

Photobucket

So, I figured now that race season is over for this year that I should start thinking about next year's calendar.

Why oh why oh why do all the races I want to do have to be in May???

For real, here's the list of races I would like to do:

1. Wisconsin Marathon or Half Marathon - May 1, 2010 (Kim is planning to run the half and I think it would be fun to run it with her)

2. Illinois Marathon or Half Marathon - May 1, 2010 (in my hometown and Lindsay just told me she's signed up for the half)

3. Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon or Half Marathon - May 2, 2010 (I went to college just outside Cincy and would love to go back and run this race)

4. Indianapolis Mini Marathon - May 8, 2010 (I've always wanted to run on the Indianapolis Speedway)

5. Quarryman Challenge 10 Miler - May 8, 2010 (apparently my lunch time running group does this one every year)

6. Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K - May 16, 2010 (one of my best friends who recently got into running and who lives in Cleveland told me about this one. At the very least, I'd love to run the 10K with her.)

7. Soldier Field 10 Miler - May 29, 2010 (I'm planning to run this with Holly who is planning to fly out to visit me that weekend)

And those are just the ones I know about!

Plus, I'm still trying to decide what marathon to do in 2010. Since it will be my first (and possibly last) marathon so I want to make a good choice. Right now the only thing that's for sure on the race calendar is the Soldier Field 10 Miler so I don't know if I want to run my first marathon right before that. I just don't know if I'd be recovered enough to do well at the 10 miler later that month. If I don't run a marathon in May then I'll probably sign up to run the Chicago Marathon or the Grand Rapids Marathon in October 2010.

Too many decisions!

Do you ever have this problem? What do you do?

Erin! #1! YES! YES YES!!! :P

Jeez, why are they all in May?! That is craziness. Hey, if you sign up for Chicago 2010, we can train together - long runs on the weekends! Yay!

There have been times when multiple races have been on the same day/in the same month. Since I am not a superstar, I don't do back to backs. I just choose the one that is most convenient/sounds the most fun!

Ah. there are are still a few short races in chicago before the year ends ;)

I cant even think about next year yet, but what about Shamrock Shuffle? I'll prob. do that one ...

Do the Indy Mini! It is SUCH a neat experience running on the track. Plus, about 40,000 people participate, so there is so much energy! HOPEfully if I get my knee under control, my plan is to do it, too....

And I would LOVE to do Chicago next fall, but we'll see what my body says. I can't believe it's time to think about '10 races?!

I did the Cleveland Marathon and I would recommend it. Not the prettiest course, but FLAT and well organized!

Don't forget a half marathon is good practice for a full at least 3 weeks out if you're planning. Lots of good choices there! I'm in the same boat with a lot of the same races here. Decisions!

I would say the Illinois Half but I'm biased. And I know that you've done that one before so I understand if you choose something else. Though I haven't ran with you in ages, it'll fun to run with you again sometime.

Hi Erin,

I just found your blog through Kim's, and I'm enjoying it! That's a great list of potential races...I just ran my first half in November, and I'm starting to think about spring/summer runs as well. They start to really add up though-- and they're expensive!!

Wow there are a ton of races! What a selection. I think you should do the Chicago marathon, it's here and a biggie to start with!
