Deep Freeze

Last night was cold. As in, definitely below freezing cold. I think it was maybe 13oF when I left my house to go running.

I debated about what to wear. Last week when I ran I wore my fleece and was too hot. So this week I wore a short-sleeved top and two long-sleeved tops, a fleece ear band around my neck, a fleece ear band over my ears, tights, shorts, mittens, and long SmartWool socks.

When I arrived at our starting point I looked around and felt woefully underdressed. I was surrounded by ski gloves, balaclavas, and windbreakers. When we stepped out of the store to start running the wind blasted me and I was immediately chilled.

I left the Garmin at home because I didn't want the pressure of trying to keep a certain pace in the cold but I somehow ended up running with one of the faster women. Either she was slowing down to hang with me or I was speeding up to hang with her. I'm not sure which and now I wish I'd had my Garmin.

Either way, we did all 5.5 miles together and most of me warmed up by the end of the first mile. My thighs, however, were like solid blocks of ice and my right knee was stiff for the rest of the night. We talked running tights when we got back to the store at our starting/end point and I proceeded to feel every pair in the place.

I definitely need more tights. The two pairs I have just don't cut it. I see some shopping in my future. What's your favorite piece of workout clothing?

It's so hard to dress for winter running!! Especially when wind is involved.

That cat picture made me die laughing. Ha.

My favorite piece of workout clothing is my Sports Bra. the "Ta-Ta-Tamer" it's called. For those of us lucky enough to be well endowed, it is a life saver.

Pants that are long enough since I'm pretty tall. My favorite pair is from GapBody: performance sport pants.

I love my nike pants. My hubs came home yesterday with a balaclava for me that I'm anxious to try out (that wind kills me, and since I'm mostly running around my subdivision, there's no way to plan for "into the wind" vs. "wind at your back")...

I'm impressed -- the coldest I've dared to try so far is maybe 23*, but that's because I don't have anything for my face, what with the steam-prone glasses and all...

Kudos to you for running! I have not been able to make myself go out in the afternoon unless I have my running group!

I have been wearing some Lululemon tights, which have kept me warm, and I'm wishing for their heavy duty (windproof front, wicking back) pants for xmas! Tops are always a challenge, but I ran on Sunday w/ a insulating top & windproof vest, cap & earwarmers. I love my Smartwool socks too.

Good for you to go running in that weather! We have very mild winters compared to yours. I have a few New Balance long sleeve tech shirts that I love.

Ha. I love that picture. :)

Have you ever tried a balaclava? That may be one of my fave winter workout clothing items. I hardly ever have it over my mouth though. And you know I love Under Armour.

I would love some new tights too!

How has your knee been?

get a cheap pair of nylon wind pants. Wear them over your tights. If it's not windy, you will be too warm. If it is, you will be toasty, once you warm up. If you are too warm, you can stop and take them off and tie them around your waist. It helps if they have ankle zippers. Good for XC skiing, too

Wow I can't imagine sweating in this weather from running. That is crazy. My favorite piece of workout clothing is my Old Navy yoga pants. I am addicted to them. Stay safe running out there!

I had really nice Adidas tights last year, but I fell twice on the ice and ripped open both knees. I'm gonna' get another pair this year--they have "brushed" in the name, and they are lined with light fleece. Awesome. Really.

I wear UA cold weather tights and a wind pant over the tights. My legs are nice & warm.

Erin, this video made me think of this post: http://icanhascheezburger.com/2010/12/15/funny-pictures-videos-cats-play-in-snow/

(Not sure if there is audio, I didn't have mine on - if you watch until the end the cats are in the snow!)
