A story of going from being a non-runner to planning for a marathon in three years...

Season's End

I haven't done much running this week other than Monday. Work has been busy (so no running at lunch) and other than going to a Pilates class on Tuesday night I haven't had the free time in the evening to work out.

That's partially because on Wednesday night we had our "end of track" party! Our coach and his wife provided the food and the rest of us provided the wine. We had a great time talking about next year's race plans and ideas for future club meetings. Speaking of which what kind of topics would you be interested in hearing about at a meeting for runners?

Of course we also talked about more than just running. Including Broadway shows. The reason I couldn't run on Thursday night after work was because Jason and I had free tickets to see Billy Elliot. My review? Sadly, just a "meh". Not bad, but I'm glad I didn't pay $100 a ticket for it. Although I do have Solidarity stuck in my head today.

In addition to wrapping up track for the season, I thought my interview about the Chicago Marathon over at Melinda's blog was a great capstone to the experience. Check it out for a nice summary of why and how I managed to run my first marathon.

So although track season and my marathon season has come to an end, I'm not totally done racing quite yet. Although I passed on the Chicago Monster Dash half marathon, I am tentatively planning on running the Lincolnwood Turkey Trot 10K with people from work as well as running the Rotary Santa Run 5K with Kim.

And then the season will really be over. At least until January when training for spring races starts. Stay tuned!

How far do you travel to run with your running club? I'm interested in joining one, but the nearest I've found is a good 30 minute drive from me, so I'm just curious how far people are willing to travel to run with a group...

I am doing the Santa Run too! It looks like so much fun. I am looking forward to an end of the season too. It's nice to take it easy for awhile and figure out your goals for next year.

Here in SA running clubs are big. Some races, including Comrades, specify that you have to be a club member to enter. One good thing of the strong club system is great races hosted by the clubs.

I'm surprised about Billy Elliot, I had really liked the movie...

I'm also thinking of doing the Santa Shuffle here in Mtl :)

I agree with you on Billy Elliott. We bought mid-range tickets and it was fine but didn't blow me away. But the dancing WAS good. I hear you too on not being able to work out in the evenings, lately, it's been a battle for me too!

I feel better passing on the tickets now! I was seriously bummed.

The running club party sounds like fun! I think interesting topics for next year would be bare-foot/minimalist running (that could be an interesting debate), scheduling races (when to run a race vs when to "race" a race), avoiding injuries, how to use a foam roller (I only know a few moves), how to perfect your gait... yeah. I could go on.

Let me know what you are thinking for the spring when you get your schedule going! I just have the Frosty Footrace scheduled and tentatively that half in March (really, I will sign up the week of depending on if there is snow on the ground still!).

Oh, and I could probably run during lunch on Friday if you want to... or we could eat together.
